The Most Important Meal of the Day

By Dave Monahan, CSCS

Breakfast. The one meal many of us don't have time to eat, or if we do have time, we're eating the wrong type of breakfast. Why is breakfast so important? It's in the name: break fast... as in break the fast you've been engaging in while sleeping the night away. Your metabolism needs a morning meal in order to jumpstart it like a car engine. Without food - fuel - at the start of your day you'll be sluggish, inefficient for hours. To use the car analogy again, skipping breakfast is like driving your car with low oil and little gas. You'll probably get you where you want to go, but barely.

Plus, routinely skipping breakfast makes it more challenging to fulfill your nutritional needs for the day. Malnutrition increases the risk of infection and infectious disease, and even moderate malnutrition can weaken every part of your immune system. Since you work out regularly, you obviously care about your body and your health. Eating breakfast is vital to athletic performance. The success of your ARX workout depends on adequate fuel to power you through, and the earlier in the day you consume that fuel the greater positive impact it will have on your performance in the gym and in your daily life.

Of course, what you eat - not just when - is also critical. Here are a few of my favorite morning meals:

  • Cold or hot oatmeal -- the real stuff, not the flavored, sugar-laden packaged junk. Soak oats in coconut milk or almond milk overnight. In the morning heat it up in the microwave or eat cold with your favorite fruit and cinnamon.
  • A poached egg on half an English muffin with roasted tomatoes
  • A protein smoothie
