ARX Update

Dear ARX Members,

Now that the winter is FINALLY over, I want to thank you on behalf of the entire ARX and Athletic Republic staff for coming to the gym through snow storms, ice storms, cold rain and frigid temperatures. What a long winter! We pushed through and made it out alive each week and each workout.

As you may know, Derek Grant is leaving our staff at the end of April. I want to take a moment to recognize him and thank him for his hard work. Derek began at Athletic Republic as an intern in the summer of 2011. He proved he could take on the responsibility of a trainer, and assumed that role by the fall. Since then he's blossomed as a trainer and a leader, quickly gaining confidence in working with athletes and running the gym floor. When the ARX program was born, he was a key part in developing it: helping to launch the newsletter and designing workouts for the past eight months. We are truly going to miss his training style, program design, and personality. We wish him the best of luck in the future and we know he will kick butt in New York.

We are currently on the hunt for a new ARX trainer. If you know of anyone who would be a good fit, please ask him or her to contact PJ or me. In the meantime, Brian will expand the number of classes he covers, and Athletic Republic trainer Jared Mello - most of you have seen him around, working with the athletes - will join the ARX staff until a permanent trainer is named.

Jared earned a B.S. in Physical Education/Exercise Science from Bridgewater State and is a certified USA Weightlifting Sport Performance Coach. As an athlete, he played football and lacrosse in high school, and in college was a national-level Olympic weightlifting competitor. He worked as a trainer at two other gyms before joining the staff at Athletic Republic, and has student-taught classes at Bridgewater State, as well as served as a teaching assistant. He's a great addition to the ARX staff.

Looking ahead, there are some exciting developments on the horizon for ARX. I will take over the program design for the foreseeable future and welcome any requests from members. As the nice weather approaches, more workouts will incorporate outdoor elements, as well as new exercises. (If you see me and want to chat about anything, please do not hesitate. Or drop me an email.)

A new ARX community bulletin board will serve as an information hub for you to learn about upcoming competitive opportunities, including 5k runs, adventure races (like the Tough Mudder and Spartan races), as well as other fun activities. We hope you'll consider signing up for an event or two - and use them to give a focus to your training. These events will also act as a way to bring the ARX community even closer together. How? We aim to organize teams for these events - teams that may include both ARX members and staffers. If you have any events you would like us to be part of, please inform one of the ARX trainers. More information will follow regarding specific events, so check Facebook and Twitter on a regular basis.

That's all for now. See you around the gym!
